In his first public statement since a truce with Israel was reached on Tuesday, Iran’s supreme leader has reaffirmed that the US “gained no achievements” from strikes on its nuclear sites.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the retaliation against an American air base in Qatar a “heavy blow” and stated that the strikes did not “accomplish anything significant” to undermine Iran’s nuclear program. It happened as Washington reaffirmed its belief that the attacks had seriously weakened Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
According to intelligence obtained by the US and Israel, the operation “significantly damaged the nuclear program, setting it back by years,” according to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
US President Donald Trump has already declared that the strikes on three important nuclear sites inside Iran “totally obliterated” them. He has also angrily reacted to reports that suggest the damage may not have been as great as initially thought, citing anonymous American sources.
At a Pentagon news conference Thursday morning, Hegseth and senior general Dan Caine declared that the mission was a “historic success” and that it had “rendered [Iranian] enrichment facilities inoperable.
