Over the past three years, a joint operation by Polish and Gardaí police has resulted in the seizure of drugs valued at over 8 million euros in Ireland, breaking up a portion of a criminal network that spanned other European nations.
The investigation, which found 340 kilos of cannabis plant and 155 kilograms of cannabis resin, resulted in the arrest of 13 Polish nationals in Ireland. Poland’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBSP) claims that Polish nationals residing in Spain, some of whom had ties to football hooligan gangs, were primarily in charge of the groupings.
Six hundred kilograms of marijuana, 180 kilograms of hashish, 40 kilograms of amphetamine sulfate, seven weapons, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were confiscated during the investigation, according to a statement from the CBSP.
Video footage of one of Ireland’s most spectacular drug seizures, the discovery of 2.2 tonnes of cocaine valued at 157 million euros on a container ship in September 2023, was recently made public in a related case. Since then, eight men who acknowledged their involvement in the smuggling effort have been sentenced.
The Irish Army Ranger Wing boarded the Panama-flagged MV Matthew in gale-force winds as it sailed into Irish territorial waters from Curaçao, a Caribbean island outside Venezuela, according to footage made public last month. The stressful moments were captured on audio as the Irish Naval Service pursued the ship, firing shots and shouting warnings before soldiers landed from helicopters to secure the ship.
