Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signed a new German–Italian Action Plan during an intergovernmental summit held in Rome on Friday, marking a fresh step in bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The talks focused on strengthening the European Union’s strategic autonomy, improving industrial competitiveness, particularly in the automotive sector, and expanding cooperation on defence, energy and migration.
Speaking after the meeting at Villa Doria Pamphili, Meloni said Europe must become more authoritative and competitive, stressing that Italy and Germany carry a special responsibility at this moment in history. She added that the EU must decide whether it wants to actively shape its own future.
Merz highlighted the close relationship between the two countries, noting that Italy and Germany are now closer than ever after 75 years of diplomatic ties. He emphasised the need to boost industrial strength and enhance security, while urging Europe to stay focused on issues such as Ukraine, energy security and a strong NATO.
Under the new action plan, both countries pledged to coordinate responses to Russia’s war in Ukraine and support efforts to end the conflict in Gaza. The summit also saw the signing of several bilateral agreements covering areas including security, technology, agriculture and education.
