State visits are as much about the attire as they are about the actions and words of the participants. During their tour to the UK, US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have demonstrated a great deal of fashion diplomacy. These are some of the most striking outfits to yet, from the Princess of Wales’ feather brooch to the First Lady’s hat.
Impressive headwear is nothing new to Melania; at her husband’s inauguration earlier this year, her wide-brimmed hat in white and navy was a talking point. Trump made an uncomfortable attempt to kiss her, but it was difficult because of the brim of her hat. Then the internet took off.
On the first day of the state visit, the first lady went for an equally spectacular flourish. She wore a classic dark grey Dior suit and a wide-brimmed purple hat that seemed to block up her eyes when she arrived at Windsor Castle. “Melania’s hat is not by chance,” stated Marian Kwei, a Vogue contributor and celebrity stylist. “The hat with the wide brim that hides her face is pointing to a stance where she wants all eyes on her husband and his agenda while here,” she stated. According to her, it was “a nod to her support for her husband’s agenda during this state visit” because it was the identical color of Trump’s tie.
