A 14-year-old boy from Chembrassery near Pandikkad in the Malappuram district passed away at the Government Medical College Hospital on Sunday, following the fifth outbreak of the Nipah virus in Kerala since 2018. A 68-year-old Malappuram man who is reportedly unrelated to the index patient and has Nipah symptoms is admitted to Kozhikode Medical College in critical condition, further exacerbating the situation.
On Sunday, the Union Health Ministry announced that a Nipah virus case had been discovered in Kerala’s Malappuram district. “A 14-year-old Malappuram boy was admitted to a Perinthalmanna medical facility with symptoms of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) and later moved to a higher health centre in Kozhikode. But eventually, the illness claimed the patient’s life. The National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, received the samples and has confirmed a Nipah virus infection, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
On July 20, the Keralan boy was accepted into the medical college. The boy experienced a massive cardiac arrest and passed away at around 11:30 am, according to the state government. Three of his relatives are being monitored at Manjeri Medical College Hospital, with one receiving critical care support, according to state health minister Veena George. The 68-year-old man’s samples have been forwarded to NIV Pune.
