About 600 people have died as a result of landslides and floods caused by torrential rainfall in various parts of southern Asia. Millions of people in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka were affected by some of the worst flooding the region has seen in years, driven by monsoon rains exacerbated by tropical storms.
On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, heavy rain started to fall on Wednesday. “During the flood, everything was gone,” a Bireuen resident in the Aceh province of Sumatra told the Reuters news agency. I wanted to save my clothes, but my house came down. The death toll is probably going to increase since hundreds are still unaccounted for. Thousands of people are still stuck, with some waiting on rooftops for help.
Over 300 people had perished in Indonesia and 160 in Thailand as of Saturday. In Malaysia, several deaths were also recorded. More than 130 people have died and around 170 are missing in Sri Lanka, which was devastated by Cyclone Ditwah, according to officials.
Thousands of structures were inundated and dwellings were carried away in Indonesia as a result of Cyclone Senyar, a very rare tropical cyclone. After flooding devastated Sumatra, Indonesia’s disaster agency reported on Saturday that almost 300 people were remained unaccounted for.
