King Charles of Britain spoke candidly about his cancer diagnosis on Wednesday, stating that those with the disease may find it to be a “daunting” and “at times frightening” experience. Despite the fears that cancer can bring, it can illuminate the best of humanity,” Charles said in a statement given during a reception for cancer support groups held in Buckingham Palace.
I can attest to the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity, as I am one of those statistics,” Charles added. He continued by saying that having the illness “has certainly given me an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work undertaken by the remarkable organisations and individuals gathered here tonight, many of whom I have known, visited, and supported over the years.”
Furthermore, the queen stated that “it has reinforced what I have long observed during these visits – that the greatest compassion can illuminate the darkest moments of illness. Charles said that after receiving hundreds of supportive letters after receiving his diagnosis, he was “reduced to tears.” At the time, he stated, “The greatest consolation and encouragement are such kind thoughts.
Charles is the patron of Macmillan Cancer Support, one of the cancer support organisations with which the Royal Family has a long history. Following his diagnosis, he made his first public appearance at the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre in London, where he spoke with doctors and patients.
