The Kolkata Knight Riders of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have been advised to release Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Saturday, amid rising tensions between the two countries.
Following appropriate process and consultations, KKR confirmed Rahman’s release. The BCCI will allow Kolkata Knight Riders to replace him in accordance with IPL regulations, and further information would be notified in due time, KKR stated in an update.
Mustafizur, 30, has played with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals in previous IPL seasons, taking 65 wickets in 60 games. He signed with Kolkata in last month’s auction for 92 million Indian rupees, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.
The 19th edition of the IPL will commence on March 26, following India and Sri Lanka’s co-hosting of the Twenty20 World Cup in February. Last month, hundreds protested near Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi when factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was assaulted and set on fire in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district by a mob accusing him of blasphemy.
