As Kyiv Strikes Oil refineries, Russia Launches a Huge Attack on Ukraine

Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault on 14 regions of Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities said, as Kyiv retaliated with strikes on Russian oil refineries. One woman was killed in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and 30 others, including children, were injured, according to local officials.

President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia fired nearly 540 drones and 45 missiles in the latest wave of attacks, calling for tougher international sanctions against Moscow. Russia’s defence ministry said that all “designated targets” were successfully hit, though the claim has not been independently verified.

The barrage comes as international mediators continue efforts to secure a peace deal, and just days after Kyiv endured the second-largest aerial assault of the war, which killed at least 25 people. In the south-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, regional governor Serhiy Lysak confirmed multiple strikes on infrastructure during the overnight attacks. In Dnipro, the regional capital, a residential building was destroyed and a shopping centre was damaged.

Although the most recent strikes primarily affected central and southeastern Ukraine, railway infrastructure was also damaged near the capital, Kyiv. Explosions were heard in the central eastern areas, and emergency personnel were observed extinguishing fires in Zaporizhzhia.
