A 10-year nuclear energy pact is among the several agreements that India and Canada have announced since their prime leaders met in Delhi to mend strained diplomatic relations. In other sectors, including technology, vital minerals, space, defense, and education, Narendra Modi and Mark Carney reached a consensus. According to Carney, they decided to finalize a free trade agreement that had been brewing for years by the end of 2026. Reducing susceptibility to hefty US trade tariffs is a goal shared by both nations.
After his predecessor accused Delhi of having a hand in the 2023 assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian land, Carney’s administration is working to mend the tense relationship between the two countries. India vehemently denied Justin Trudeau’s accusation. As both sides canceled visa services and removed each other’s diplomats, trade and diplomatic relations nearly came to a halt. There is a sizable Indian expat population in Canada.
However, since Carney entered office last year, the connection has been carefully restored, aided by his government’s declaration that it does not now believe India is connected to violent acts or threats on Canadian land. However, other Canadians have refuted that assertion, including members of the Sikh diaspora in Canada and a Liberal MP from Carney’s own party, who say they think India still targets them.
Anita Anand, Canada’s foreign minister, disassociated herself from remarks made by a senior Canadian official claiming that India has stopped all foreign meddling in Canada after Carney’s meeting with Modi on Monday.”I personally wouldn’t use the senior official’s words,” she told reporters in Delhi. However, Anand said that “we need to have these diplomatic conversations in order to make progress” and supported Canada’s move to re-engage with India. Since the start of his trip, Carney has not yet talked to Canadian press. Citing his busy schedule, his administration canceled a scheduled news conference after the meeting with Modi.
