Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, met with Keir Starmer, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, in London on Tuesday to discuss peace and sanctions against Russia.
The conference takes place at a time when the Iran war has boosted Russia’s flagging economy through oil money, stalled US-brokered negotiations to halt Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and may eventually restrict Kyiv’s access to critical Western air defence systems that are required in the Middle East.
At a meeting with Zelenskyy at 10 Downing Street, where NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was also present, Starmer stated, “We can’t lose focus on what’s going on in Ukraine and the need for our support.”
Whether it’s lower oil prices or the lifting of sanctions, Putin cannot profit from the Iranian dispute, according to Starmer. “It is crucial that we maintain our commitment to helping Ukraine and do everything in our power to undermine Putin’s influence.
In an effort to relieve strain on international supplies brought on by the Middle East conflict, which was initiated by joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran beginning on February 28, the US temporarily lifted some Russian oil restrictions last week.
