In the upcoming years, Lucid Group hopes to become the first carmaker to offer very advanced self-driving capabilities in its vehicles, the firm announced Tuesday. The producer of all-electric cars anticipates introducing what it calls “mind-off” driving, which allows a car to operate mainly on its own in routine situations without a human having to keep an eye on it or step in, except in emergencies, such as bad weather. That would be similar to a passenger watching TV or playing cards while the vehicle is moving.
On Tuesday, Lucid announced that the upcoming system will use Nvidia’s “Drive AV” platform and multisensor suite, which includes cameras, radar, and lidar (light detection and ranging), enabling the car to better “see” its environment.
Lucid interim CEO Marc Winterhoff stated that the new system will be introduced “definitely in the coming years,” although he would not provide a specific date beyond 2026. According to him, the system will initially be developed for Lucid’s next midsize car before being extended to other models. Personal self-driving cars have been promised by numerous firms, such as Tesla and General Motors, but have yet to be delivered. After years of attempting to implement the technology, the majority of automakers have withdrawn their billion-dollar investments in autonomous vehicles.
