In his proposals for a significant increase in defence expenditure, French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Europe’s freedom is under “greater threat” than it has been since the conclusion of World War II.
He said that because of complicated geopolitics, “we are living in a pivotal moment” during an address to the armed troops in Paris. Macron proposed for a €3.5 billion (£3 billion) increase in France’s defence budget next year, followed by another €3 billion in 2027.
He condemned “imperialist policies” and “annexing powers” about the Russian threat. Since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, fighting has raged. By 2027, Macron promised to quadruple France’s military expenditure, three years ahead of schedule.
The defence budget of his nation was €32 billion in 2017 and was forecast to increase to €64 billion in two years. French government approval of the ideas is still pending. You have to be feared to be free in this world. He stated in the address, which was given on the eve of Bastille Day, This must be powerful to be feared.” According to Macron, the globe is seeing the “proliferation of major conflicts” and the return of nuclear power.
