Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela, has accused the United States of “fabricating a new war” after the country ordered the largest warship in the world to be transported to the Caribbean. The deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford, which has the capacity to carry up to 90 aircraft, significantly increases US firepower in the area. As part of what it claims is a fight on drug traffickers, the US has launched ten airstrikes against vessels in the region.
Maduro has denied being the head of a drug-trafficking organization, a charge made by US President Donald Trump. There are also concerns in Venezuela that the US military buildup is intended to overthrow Trump’s longtime rival. After the most recent election in 2024 was widely regarded as not free nor fair, Maduro is still not recognized as the legal leader of Venezuela by the US and many other countries. According to polling station tallies, the opposition’s candidate won by a significant margin.
Venezuela’s involvement in the drug trade in the region is comparatively small. What does Trump hope to achieve in Venezuela? The USS Gerald R. Ford carrier will sail to the US Southern Command area of responsibility, which encompasses the Caribbean and Central and South America, the Pentagon announced on Friday.
