McDonald’s Japan Delays a Toy Promotion in Response to Pokémon’s Objections

McDonald’s Japan has delayed a promotion for a kid’s menu item in response to accusations that a recent Pokémon giveaway resulted in food being thrown in piles and the cards being later sold for a profit. The fast food juggernaut announced on Thursday that it would no longer be working with the well-known manga series “One Piece” that has a pirate theme.

Long lines and large purchases resulted from McDonald’s giving away limited-edition Pokémon cards with its “Happy Set” meals earlier this month. Online users complained that the cards were being sold for profit and posted images of food bags discarded on the street. Many outlets ran out of cards on the first day of the promotion, which was supposed to last for three days.

As part of a “review of Happy Set-related initiatives,” McDonald’s Japan said on its website that it had postponed” the One Piece promotion, which was scheduled to begin on August 29. Instead, the business stated, customers will now receive the toys that came with earlier Happy Set meals. McDonald’s has been instructed by Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency to enhance its sales approach and implement measures to reduce food wastage.
