Early Background and Career Journey
Curious about the origins of a tech-policy visionary, we asked: “Could you share a bit about your early background, education, and the key experiences that shaped your career journey?”
Juan Kanggrawan mentioned, “Since high school and university, I’ve had a deep aspiration at the intersection between technology, strategy, and public policy. I started by reading news magazines and strategic publications, studied business and information systems for my bachelor’s, then public policy for my master’s. I began as a business analyst, maximizing data, trends, and strategy for impact. My early career took me across Indonesia, Singapore, China, Brazil, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Then came the public sector smart city and GovTech work in Indonesia. Now at C-level, I’m driven to build world-class Indonesian tech companies for global customers. Traveloka shaped my leadership foundation.”
Company Evolution Since Inception
Building on his global foundation, eager to trace Gihon’s transformation from telco roots, we asked: “How has your company evolved since its inception?”
Juan Kanggrawan reflected, “Gihon Telecommunication and technology group started with the telco tower business in the last 20 years. My key focus is to incubate and drive new digital businesses. After my contribution, we are fully expanding our services in various key areas such as data center, internet of things, data science, artificial intelligence platform, and SuperApp for the public sector. We are aggressively expanding our impact to global corporate clients (Fortune 500) and key public sectors (national ministry & provincial government) in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. We are also partnering with global tech companies and advisory/consultancy organization in our processes.”
Contribution to the Regional Ecosystem
Inspired by his expansion ambitions, wondering how Gihon fuels Indonesia’s AI surge, we asked: “How does your business contribute to the ecosystem in your region?”
Juan Kanggrawan explained, “All telco and tech companies are being impacted by the rapid development. We are incubating early AI services in Indonesia and rapidly penetrating key domains and markets. Balancing between governance and innovations is really critical, especially for clients and partners in the public sector and banking sector. Hence, beyond the traditional telco business, we have been transforming our organization (including processes and services) in the context of rapid AI development.”
Three Qualities Critical for Success
Delving deeper into his leadership ethos amid AI disruption, we asked: “What three qualities do you believe are critical for success in your industry?”
Juan Kanggrawan shared in steps, “First, innovation and openness. We stay receptive to new ideas, tools, and developments to keep enhancing our service portfolio and quality.
Second, clarity. Knowing exactly what to pursue and what to avoid, cascading a clear group-level strategy down to every operational detail.
Third, people and talent. It’s tough hiring digital experts, so we focus on bringing in high-impact external hires while nurturing our internal rising stars.”

Adapting to Technological Changes
Connecting his talent focus to AI frontiers, intrigued by practical innovations, we asked: “How has your organization adapted to technological changes? Share a key innovation you’ve implemented.”
Juan Kanggrawan highlighted, “We’re leveraging the latest AI solutions that deliver real impact across the board. We’ve implemented vibe coding with automated capabilities to review and ensure scalable enterprise implementations. Our automated insights generation is now trusted by C-level executives and even ministers or governors in the public sector. Most excitingly, we’re bringing practical digital solutions directly to farmers, fishermen, and doctors in remote areas, and they’re actually using them successfully.”
Navigating Key Challenges
Tying his innovations to actionable advice, seeking a roadmap for digital pioneers, we asked: “How would you guide someone to navigate the key challenges you faced when establishing yourself in this industry?”
Concludingly, Juan Kanggrawan advised, “Look, every digital organization faces three big hurdles: first, getting the structure and authority right to really drive innovation and impact; second, fostering that open, collaborative culture amid all the corporate or public sector bureaucracy; and third, smartly integrating the latest tools into your existing ecosystem without chaos.
My advice? Don’t boil the ocean, start small and practical, celebrate those early wins loudly, then scale up with a clear mid-to-long-term view.”
