We recently had the privilege of having a conversation with Vincent Douglas, Founder of SnapWatch, a wearable display band. With truly flexible display technology, SnapWatch is the first wearable band that can be slapped around the wrist and viewed straight at the same time. Dreamt of this invention more than two decades back, Vincent eventually connected with the right people and with relentless efforts, made his dream come true.
Unlike standard smartwatches, SnapWatch bands come with a flexible display platform, utilizing the entire surface of the band, with a more user-friendly viewing area and other exciting features. By leveraging cutting-edge flexible display technology, Vincent is not just enhancing usability, with SnapWatch he is redefining the wearable tech space.
Spark Behind The Journey
We started by asking, “What inspired you to start your business, and what vision drives it this day?”
Vincent Douglas shared, “My journey began in the film industry, where I spent over 25 years immersed in creativity. Dyslexia has shaped the way I see the world – it gives me a unique perspective and a deep understanding of visual storytelling. I didn’t learn to read until I was 14, it never held me back – it only fuelled my ability to think outside the box.
The idea for my business sparked 26 years ago when I came across a snap band advertising a local rugby club. It struck me – what if this simple, flexible design could be turned into a watch? Unlike conventional straps with clasps, a snap band is effortless to wear. However, I quickly realized the technology needed – flexible electronics and displays which didn’t exist at the time. When I first shared my vision, people assumed I was crazy. But being a firm believer in research and persistence, I eventually connected with a group of Cambridge University graduates developing electroluminescent displays flexible, not yet readable in daylight. Cambridge Display Technology built a prototype for me, which I still have today. This was the moment I knew the idea had real potential.”
“Understanding innovation takes time, I pursued a patent – a complex and costly process if you’re not working with the right people. Once secured, I kept my eye on global research, waiting for technology to catch up. It took 15 years, but eventually, flexible display technology began to emerge. I attended countless seminars, watching as prototypes evolved, and with each step forward, I knew I was on the right path. Today, my vision continues to drive me. It’s about pushing boundaries, embracing new possibilities, and creating something which not only solves a problem but changes the way we interact with technology.” He added.
Switching To Tech-Driven Innovations
We were interested to learn more about Vincent’s take on tech-driven innovations. So, we asked him to share his views on utilizing the latest technology to drive innovation and efficiency in his company.
Vincent Douglas explained, “With the commercialization of flexible display technology – seen in innovations like Samsung’s foldable phones – we are now at the forefront of a new era in wearable tech. While foldable phones remain a niche market, our wearable display platform offers something truly unique compared to traditional smartwatches.
Unlike standard smartwatches with small, restrictive screens, our flexible display platform utilizes the entire surface of the band, providing a significantly larger and more user-friendly viewing area. Additionally, our design features a two-form factor mechanical process, allowing the band to remain rigid when needed without requiring a flat surface. This adaptability means the hardware can be seamlessly integrated around various parts of the body, offering greater versatility than existing smartwatch designs.
By leveraging cutting-edge flexible display technology, we are not just enhancing usability – we are redefining what’s possible in the wearable tech space. This innovation has the potential to transform multiple industries, paving the way for high-volume adoption across various sectors.”
Fostering Constant Learning
We further asked, “How do you foster a culture of continuous learning and growth within your team?”
“Building a team that truly supports innovation and long-term vision is one of the biggest challenges in any venture. Finding the right people – those who genuinely believe in the mission – takes time and experience. Over the years, I’ve learned there are both ‘good eggs’ and ‘bad eggs’ and it becomes clear who truly aligns with your vision as the journey unfolds.
For me, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth starts with surrounding myself with individuals who share a deep commitment to innovation. My close friend in marketing has been by my side for decades, understanding and championing my vision. Similarly, an industrial designer I worked with believed in the project so strongly that he supported me for eight years without financial compensation. This level of dedication speaks volumes.
I believe true growth comes from collaboration, persistence, and the willingness to push boundaries. When people are united by passion rather than just profit, they naturally continue learning, adapting, and refining their skills. That’s the kind of environment I strive to cultivate – one where belief in the vision fuels ongoing growth and innovation.” Vincent responded.
Competing In A Dynamic Market
Interested in understanding more about the approaches that ensure SnapWatch has a strong position in the market, we asked, “What strategies help you stay competitive in a speedy changing market?”
Vincent Douglas answered, “Staying competitive in a fast-changing market is all about forward thinking. Being the first to develop an idea and securing a patent is a strong start, but it doesn’t guarantee success. The key is continuous research – understanding industry trends, technological advancements, and market needs.
Having patent rights gives you control, but innovation also requires persistence, adaptability, and a bit of luck. Most importantly, self-belief is essential. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but staying ahead means refusing to take ‘no’ for an answer and constantly pushing forward.”
A Defining Initiative At SnapWatch
We also asked, “Can you highlight a project or initiative that made a significant impact on your company?”
“When I developed my prototype using electroluminescent technology, I immediately saw the potential of my invention -I just had to wait for the right technology to catch up. Once it did, I created a simple product to test the market, and within two months, I had sold out of my entire stock. That moment was a huge milestone. It proved the demand for my idea and confirmed if scaled to volume, it had the potential to be a major success.” He explained.
Staying Ahead Of The Curve
To ensure Vincent’s business remains agile and adaptable to industry changes, he applies certain strategies and we were interested to learn about them.
Vincent Douglas mentioned, “I’m in a unique position – I operate at the cutting edge of new technology and hold robust, broad patents which will evolve alongside industry advancements. Thanks to the expertise of my patent attorney, my intellectual property is well-protected, allowing me to adapt as new technologies emerge. This ensures my business remains agile, competitive, and always ahead of the curve.”
Visions For The Company
Eager to learn his short-term and long-term goals, and his plans to achieve them, we asked him to share about the same.
“In the short term, my focus is securing partnerships under licensing agreements with companies that recognize the potential of the wearable platform and can help scale it. Long term, I plan to launch a new project and support other entrepreneurs. I find immense satisfaction in problem-solving and offering fresh perspectives, and I want to use my experience to help others bring their ideas to life.” He replied.
Message To Beginners
Addressing the beginners in his field, we asked Vincent Douglas to share some words of wisdom for entrepreneurs looking to make an impact.
“Research, research, research – this is my number one rule before starting any venture. Understand your market, your competition, and the challenges ahead. Choose your team wisely and whenever possible, maintain control of your company. Be prepared for the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, and above all, believe in yourself. Resilience and conviction are what turn ideas into reality.” He added.
