Friedrich Merz, Germany’s incoming chancellor, called on all parties to prevent a “famine” in Gaza, which Israel has been denying supplies to since early March. Merz stated that “we expect efforts for more humanitarian provision for the population in Gaza whose suffering we see, especially among children, women, and the elderly” while restating that Germany supports Israel.
“It is a humanitarian duty on all parties… and I anxiousness, on all parties that starving in the region be averted as early as possible,” Merz said in parliament. Merz expressed his desire for “successful negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages” that Hamas is still holding, including German nationals.
Germany, which has been a strong backer of Israel and has long worked to make amends for the Holocaust, celebrated 60 years of diplomatic ties with Israel this week.
