The latest Mexican politician to lose the privilege, the mayor of a border community in northern Mexico said Thursday, August 7, that his visa had been canceled by US officials. In a video uploaded to X, Nogales’ mayor, Juan Francisco Gim, who lives next door to the US state of Arizona, stated that “the United States government has taken a measure regarding my immigration status, which I respect.”
The governor of Baja California, a state in northwest Mexico that shares a border with the United States, Marina del Pilar Avila, said in May of last year that her visa had been revoked by US officials. Both lawmakers belong to the Morena party, which is in power. Immigration officials refused to divulge anything, citing the confidentiality of foreign visa data under US law.
Although Gim did not provide an explanation, he said that the visa revocation was the result of “an administrative process” and that he had not been charged with “anything improper at all” by US officials. “I continue to work normally… I even participate in binational meetings on security issues,” the mayor of Nogales stated in the video. The mayor of Nogales referred to the immigration crackdown under the Donald Trump administration as “cleaning house” in an appearance on Fox News last month.
