Officials blame Ukraine for the most recent apparent death of a top military leader after a Russian general was killed in a car bombing in Moscow. According to a statement from Russia’s investigating committee, Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who oversaw the armed forces operational training department, perished on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a car’s chassis detonated.
Investigators are looking at a number of reasons why the murder occurred. The committee continued, “One theory is that Ukrainian special services organized the crime. Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, several well-known Russians have been shot dead or killed by explosives in Moscow in strikes attributed to the Ukrainian security forces.
A severely damaged car was seen in a parking lot in a Moscow middle-class area in a video that was made public by Russian official media on Monday. According to Russian news agency TASS, Sarvarov had led the training department for nine years. According to TASS, the 56-year-old had previously “carried out the tasks of organizing and conducting an operation in Syria” while Russian soldiers were supporting the Assad government.
