As Beijing attempts to raise expenditure to bolster the weakening economy, millions of government workers across China received surprise wage hikes this week, according to those impacted by the decision. If all 48 million persons considered public sector employees received the instant dividend on the parameters outlined to Reuters, the total would represent a one-time economic boost of between $12 billion and $20 billion.
China last publicly declared a nationwide pay boost for civil personnel in 2015, when the government increased local officials’ salaries by over 30% in an attempt to fight corruption and increase the purchasing power of its citizens. A request for comment was not immediately answered by the State Council Information Office, which represents the Chinese government. According to those reached by Reuters or who shared on social media, government workers’ monthly salaries were raised by an average of roughly 500 yuan ($68.50) this time.
A few lower-level government employees claimed monthly raises of around 300 yuan ($41). According to persons with knowledge of the situation, the pay raise for public sector employees and officials was frequently given in one lump sum bonus payment that was backdated to July.
