Modi Informs Trump that India Would not Accept third-Party Mediation over Kashmir

According to India’s top diplomat, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has informed US President Donald Trump that Delhi will never agree to third-party mediation with Pakistan on the Kashmir dispute. In a phone conversation with Trump on Tuesday, Modi “strongly” communicated India’s long-standing stance, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Trump has made many offers to negotiate a settlement between India and Pakistan to resolve the “Kashmir issue” since the two nuclear-armed neighbours fought for four days in May. Regarding India’s comments, the White House has not responded.

Additionally, according to Mr. Misri, Modi informed Trump “clearly” that “no talks were held at any level on the India-America trade deal or on the mediation between India and Pakistan by America” during the crisis.

Trump has stated on several occasions that he used trade as leverage to persuade India and Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire mediated by the United States, which ultimately led to the end of the conflict. While India has denied it, Pakistan has supported US assertions that it mediated the truce. The talks about suspension of military action have occurred directly between India and Pakistan under the existing channels established between both militaries,” stated Misri.
