A prominent Russian military general was wounded in Moscow after being shot many times. After the incident at a residential block on the northwest suburbs of the Russian capital, Lt Gen Vladimir Alexeyev was brought to the hospital immediately; his health is unknown at this time.
The latest high-ranking military person to be targeted in the capital since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began almost four years ago is Alexeyev, who is number two in the main directorate of Russia’s GRU military intelligence.
Sanctions were imposed on him by the EU and the UK following accusations that the GRU was responsible for the nerve agent attack in Salisbury, UK, in 2018. According to Svetlana Petrenko of Russia’s Investigations Committee, the victim has been admitted to a hospital in the city. The committee has announced that it has initiated a criminal investigation for attempted murder.
According to a neighbour of Alexeyev who spoke to Reuters, she was startled awake by what she described as “several” gunshots and then heard a neighbour yelling for assistance.Nothing further was mentioned. Along with that, other neighbours bolted. She had already phoned the police and ambulance when they enquired how they could be of assistance.
