Millions of people’s lives have been disturbed by heavy rainfall in Mumbai, India’s financial center, which has flooded roads and forced the cancelation of flights and trains. Videos show people swimming across wet roadways while trash poured out of blocked sewers, and many areas of the city are still waist deep in water. On Tuesday, authorities rescued 600 passengers who became trapped on a packed monorail system that halted in the middle of its voyage. According to authorities, at least 23 people needed suffocation treatment.
In Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is located, monsoon rains are typical during this time of year. However, this time around, the area is seeing exceptionally high levels of precipitation. This week, rain-related incidents have claimed the lives of at least 21 persons around the state. The India Meteorological Department reports that 800 mm of rain fell over Mumbai in just four days, far more than the typical August rainfall.
With extremely heavy rains expected to continue on Wednesday, India’s meteorological service has issued a red alert for the city and its surrounding regions, although it has also stated that conditions will improve later this week. About 350 people have been moved to temporary shelters from the city’s low-lying districts, and the majority of schools and universities have been closed.
