Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared he would try to fire Shin Bet security chief Ronen Bar following months of hostilities. According to the prime minister’s office, on Sunday, Netanyahu met with Bar and told him he would suggest his dismissal to the government this week.
Netanyahu is thought to have the backing of the majority in government to fire Bar, but the Supreme Court of Israel may challenge the decision. Bar stated in a statement that before quitting his job, he plans to complete a few tasks.
The Prime Minister’s expectation of a personal duty of trust whose purpose contradicts the public interest is a fundamentally wrong expectation,” Bar stated. “The head of the Shin Bet owes this duty of trust first and foremost to the citizens of Israel this perception is what underlies all of my actions and decisions.”
Netanyahu said in a video statement made public on Sunday that this choice was the result of his “ongoing mistrust” of Bar. Netanyahu stated, “The prime minister must always have complete faith in the leader of the Shin Bet, but especially in such an existential conflict. Netanyahu went on to say that Bar’s removal would be essential to accomplishing Israel’s war objectives in Gaza and “avoid the next disaster.
