New Evidence Reveals that Police Falsely Accused a Guy of Murder

According to BBC Panorama, new information in the case of a man sentenced to 23 years in jail for murder reveals that he was framed by police. According to police, the testimony of the key prosecution witness in Omar Benguit’s trial for the murder of South Korean student Jong-Ok Shin was directly contradicted by CCTV footage.

A total of 13 other witnesses used to support the prosecution case have now informed the BBC that they were coerced by the police to exaggerate their testimony or lie in court. Dorset Police did not immediately respond to the claim that police had framed Benguit, but did state that their investigation was “thorough, detailed, and very complex”.After analysing Panorama’s findings, former murder squad detective Brian Murphy requested that the Independent Office for Police Conduct investigate Dorset Police’s handling of the case.

The former detective chief inspector, who has been involved in over 200 murder investigations, believes Benguit’s conviction is questionable. “This cries out for a review without a doubt,” he said. Benguit’s barrister, Des Jenson, stated that if police pressured witnesses to lie, “it means that they have manufactured evidence, they’ve perverted the course of justice”.
