In the contest to succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister, Mark Carney has vowed to defeat US President Donald Trump in the trade war when he assumes leadership of Canada during a period of extreme instability. In the Liberal Party’s leadership race, the former governor of the Bank of England and the Canadian central bank defeated three opponents by a wide margin.
Carney, 59, lambasted Trump in a large portion of his victory address, accusing him of wanting to make Canada the 51st US state and imposing taxes on the country. “Americans should make no mistake,” he stated. “Canada will prevail in trade, just like in hockey.
Carney will lead the Liberals in the upcoming general election, which is anticipated to be called in the upcoming weeks, and will take the oath of office as prime minister in the days ahead.
Following Trudeau’s resignation after almost ten years in government, the Liberal leadership contest began in January. Due to widespread dissatisfaction among voters over the housing crisis and growing cost of living, he had been under internal pressure to resign.
Carney defeated his closest opponent, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, with 85.9% of the vote in Sunday night’s first round. There were loud shouts when the results were revealed to about 1,600 party supporters in Ottawa, Canada’s capital.
