Off the Northern Coast of Japan, an Earthquake with a Magnitude of 7.2 Causes a Tsunami Alert

According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, a strong earthquake that occurred off the northern shore of Japan on Monday caused a tsunami alarm. According to the agency, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake with an epicenter roughly 50 kilometers below the sea’s surface occurred off the coast of Hokkaido, close to the seaside city of Aomori.

The Hokkaido prefecture town of Urakawa and the Aomori prefecture port of Mutsu Ogawara were hit by a 40-centimeter tsunami, according to the agency, which had previously issued a tsunami alert warning of waves up to three meters. According to public broadcaster NHK, nuclear power stations in the area were doing safety inspections.

Public broadcaster NHK said that the government has established a response room at Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s office and that nuclear power stations in the area were performing safety inspections.

According to NHK, an offshore tsunami was observed about 6 miles off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan. According to the broadcaster, there were additional reports of a tsunami wave off Erimo Town further north that was around a foot tall. According to NHK, waves as large as a foot and a half have been observed close to the town of Urakawa.
