On May 3, Australia will hold a federal election, which is expected to be a close contest. The date was announced Friday by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese from Parliament House, whose Labour Party will be defending a slim majority.
The country’s two biggest parties are predicted to be separated by a narrow margin, and it may be necessary for one of them to create the next government by collaborating with independent MPs or smaller parties that received a record number of votes in the most recent election.
Labour is battling to avoid becoming the first single-term government to lose an election in over a century, and cost-of-living concerns are predicted to dominate the campaign.
Albanese, who has previously announced intentions to reduce student debt, give more free healthcare, and implement minor tax cuts, reaffirmed his commitment to decrease the cost of living during a press conference on Friday morning. He maintained that the country would regress if his opponent, Peter Dutton, were elected.
He referred to the previous coalition government he overthrew in the most recent election in 2022 when he stated, “It was always going to take more than three years to clean up 10 years of mess,
