California Governor Gavin Newsom brought his familiar sparring style with President Donald Trump to the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, prompting a brief but widely broadcast exchange that quickly drew global attention.
Soon after the moment, Newsom claimed that the Trump administration blocked him from entering a pavilion where he was scheduled to speak. The incident, combined with Trump calling him out during a speech, became fresh material for both leaders’ social media teams and further raised Newsom’s international profile as he positions himself for a potential 2028 presidential run.
Newsom was in the audience on Wednesday when Trump referenced him during a wide-ranging address that included renewed demands for Denmark to hand over Greenland to the United States. While discussing domestic issues, Trump struck a friendly tone, saying the US wanted to help California and reduce crime. He added that he and Newsom had once worked well together and described the governor as “a good guy.” Cameras later showed Newsom smiling and laughing lightly as Trump spoke. The president went on to suggest that if he were a Democratic governor, he would invite Trump in to “make us look good,” drawing more attention to the exchange.
