Russian brigades have captured hundreds of square kilometers of terrain in recent weeks, greatly outnumbering Ukrainian Soldiers in the south of the country. In numerous areas of southern Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces have advanced across open terrain. On Wednesday, a Ukrainian security agency (SBU) officer told CNN that the situation in the area was “intense.
The officer, known by the call sign “Bankir,” stated, “The enemy is trying to strengthen its negotiating position by attempting to capture more territory. He went on to say that the Russians were employing tiny infantry companies “who are trying to break through by any means, by any route, to the positions that are least protected.”
The town of Huliaipole has been the scene of much of the recent violence. Huliaipole is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Zaporizhzhia, the regional capital, which was home to over 700,000 people prior to the conflict. Andrei Ivanaev, the Russian commander in the area, declared the town had been captured during a meeting on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin attended. Ivanaev informed Putin that since early December, his forces had captured more than 210 square kilometers of land in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia districts, supporting the Kremlin’s narrative that Russia will eventually succeed in capturing four areas of eastern and southern Ukraine.
