Paddy Power Betfair Will Pay £2 Million for its Shortcomings in Problem Gambling

Power from Paddy Betfair has agreed to pay £2 million for failing to intervene promptly when patrons seemed to be engaging in problem gambling. One customer staked £86,000 in less than two weeks, but “no manual review of the account took place,” according to the Gambling Commission’s list of cases when the bookmaker failed to act quickly enough to stop consumers from participating in dangerous gambling behavior.

It is mandatory for betting companies to have procedures and systems that keep an eye on gambling activities. Paddy Power Betfair’s owner, Flutter Entertainment, stated that it takes consumer safety seriously and is confident that the issues the watchdog identified will not recur.

According to the Gambling Commission, a compliance evaluation conducted last year identified shortcomings in the company’s social responsibility, noting that client interactions “fell far short” of minimum standards.

Although Paddy Power had mechanisms in place to detect problem gambling, the identified failures demonstrated that “the velocity of spend, increasing deposits, overnight gambling, and changing betting patterns did not appear to be identified by the licensees or acted upon until the next day.”

It provided an additional example of a client who experienced significant betting sprees, including one that lasted almost eight hours. The client wagered over 300 times, totaling £20,000. Another client made a £25,000 deposit “before being interacted with” in 25 days.
