Celebrities like Meryl Streep, Pedro Pascal, and Ben Stiller have paid tribute to Emmy-winning performer Catherine O’Hara, who died on Friday at the age of 71. The Canadian-born actress was best known for her roles in the films Beetlejuice and Home Alone, as well as comic TV shows like Schitt’s Creek and The Studio. Streep praised O’Hara for bringing “love and light to our world, through whipsmart compassion for the collection of eccentrics she portrayed,” while Pascal, her co-star in The Last of Us, expressed his “eternal gratitude” for the opportunity to collaborate. Ben Stiller stated that it was “hard to explain the impact she had on comedy” and that there was “no one better” for him.
O’Hara died on Friday at home in Los Angeles after a brief illness, her agency told the BBC. After beginning her career in Canada’s comedy scene, she delivered a succession of memorable cinematic performances that earned her critical recognition. Streep, who co-starred with O’Hara in the 1980s comedy Heartburn, said her death was “such a loss for her family and friends, and the audience she graced as friends”.
Michael Keaton, who co-starred in the 1988 film Beetlejuice and its 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, stated, “We go back before the first Beetlejuice. “She’s been my pretend wife, nemesis, and true friend.”This one hurts. “Man, am I going to miss her.” Tim Burton, who directed both films, posted a photo of the actors of the latter film on Facebook.”Catherine, I love you,” he stated. “This image depicts how much brightness you provided to all of us.
