According to local media, a 50-year-old Japanese superhero comic that served as the basis for the wildly successful Power Rangers television and film franchise of the 1990s is coming to an end.
According to sources, Super Sentai will stop airing because event and merchandise sales have not been sufficient to cover production costs. “Future programming” was not addressed by its broadcaster, TV Asahi, the Asahi newspaper reported.
The show’s formula five teenagers who change into colorful masked fighters to fight aliens was the model for Power Rangers in the US and numerous other superhero series that aired in Asia when it debuted in 1975. Many Japanese actors also used it as a springboard for their careers.
Super Sentai was more than just a television show. In essence, the weekly show served as a commercial for collectibles, toys, clothing, and costumes. It provided a window into Japan’s vibrant superhero and comic book culture for toy and animation enthusiasts outside of the country. Similar programs, such as Hikari Sentai Maskman and Choudenshi Bioman, gained cult followings in the Philippines after being dubbed into English.
