Gas Supplies Are Disrupted by The War in Iran, Which Puts Pressure on Indian Businesses

Due to the disruption of gas supply caused by the US and Israel’s attack on Iran, Indian firms claim they are finding it difficult to maintain operations. Restaurant owners are struggling to keep their kitchens operating, while business owners in sectors such as fertilizers and ceramics say they cannot sustain their output and are threatening to close.

Although India claims to have an adequate supply of gas, it has taken emergency action to guarantee that supplies reach home customers and other important users. The country meets half of its total gas demand through imports, much of which flows through the Strait of Hormuz – a tiny Gulf chokepoint – where commerce has virtually been blocked by retaliatory Iranian strikes.

Millions of barrels of gas and oil have become trapped close to the Strait of Hormuz as a result of the confrontation, which is currently in its eleventh day. The small channel is used for about 40–50% of India’s imports of crude oil. Additionally, it transports about 80–85% of the nation’s shipments of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 50–60% of its LNG imports.

LPG, which is commonly used as cooking gas, is the main worry for restaurants, cafes, and millions of other eateries throughout India. India is the world’s second-largest importer of LPG, after China, with 80–85% of its yearly use coming from imports. Nearly majority of it originates from Gulf producers that cross the Strait of Hormuz, primarily from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
