The British Royal Air Force has developed a radar-jamming drone that will fly ahead of crewed jets on missions to destroy enemy air defences. According to the UK’s Ministry of Defence, StormShroud has been deployed to the front lines “at an unprecedented pace” in response to Russia’s increasing threat, drawing on lessons acquired during the conflict in Ukraine.
The weapon, which has been equipped with a BriteStorm signal jammer that confuses enemy radar at a distance, is based on the Tekever AR3 and AR5 drones, which have already been employed in action in Ukraine.
The unmanned drones will assist fighters like the Typhoon and F-35 Lightning by blocking enemy radar, enabling the combat aircraft to strike targets covertly, according to what the RAF called “revolutionary new tactics.”
The RAF stated that for the first time, the RAF will be able to use advanced electronic warfare without having to staff it, which will allow them to focus on other crucial frontline tasks.
The RAF is receiving the first in a series of next-generation drones called Autonomous Collaborative Platforms (ACPS). Using “operational feedback in Ukraine,” where battlefield advances have expanded dramatically, the Tekever drones have been equipped with Leonardo UK’s BriteStorm electronic warfare technology.
