NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin pledged to strengthen their strategic cooperation as India and Russia reaffirmed their long-standing alliance on Friday in the face of a punitive tariff imposed by the United States on New Delhi for purchasing Russian oil. A day after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the Indian leader to address the consequences of US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, Modi called Putin to assess the two countries’ ties.
“I had an excellent and thorough talk with President Putin, my buddy. After the talk, Modi wrote on X, “I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine.” “We reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership and reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda,” he added. Later this year, Modi stated he was excited to welcome Putin to India.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the bilateral strategic cooperation during the phone call, which was held the day after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met with Putin and other top Russian officials in Moscow. According to Doval, the privileged and strategic cooperation plays a “very special role” in an unpredictable and uncertain climate. Sergey Shoigu, Doval’s Russian counterpart, stated that Russia hopes to work with India to “jointly combat modern challenges and threats” and guarantee a “more just” global order.
