Rescuers Report That Israeli Strikes in Gaza Killed 50 People after Hamas Was Accused of Killing an Israeli Soldier

According to hospitals and the Hamas-run Civil Defence organisation, a wave of Israeli strikes in Gaza on Tuesday night killed at least 50 Palestinians. Israel launched the strikes in retaliation for what it claimed were Hamas violations of the ceasefire agreement mediated by the United States.

Israel’s defense minister charged Hamas with violating the agreement to return the remains of dead captives and carrying out an attack in southern Gaza on Tuesday that killed an Israeli soldier. Hamas maintained its commitment to the ceasefire agreement and said it had “no connection” to the strike. Despite his insistence that “nothing” would endanger the ceasefire, US President Donald Trump stated that Israel should “hit back” if its soldiers were attacked.

In Gaza City and Beit Lahia in the north, Bureij and Nuseirat in the center, and Khan Younis in the south, Israeli strikes struck residences, schools, and residential buildings. At least 50 people were killed, including 22 children, and another 200 others were injured, a Civil Defense spokesman told the AFP news agency.

As explosions rocked many residential locations in Gaza City, witnesses reported seeing “pillars of fire and smoke” rising into the air. According to the Civil Defence, three ladies and a man were rescued from the debris of the al-Banna family’s house in the southern Sabra neighbourhood.
