According to a Homeland Security source on Sunday, British commentator Sami Hamdi was arrested by U.S. immigration officials, who also revoked his visa and threatened to deport him instead of allowing him to finish his speaking tour in the country.
On social media platform X, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin announced that Hamdi was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Those who encourage terrorism and jeopardize American national security will not be permitted to work or travel here under President Trump,” she said.
According to a statement from the organization, Hamdi was set to speak on Sunday at one of the Council on American Islamic Relations’ events in Florida after speaking at a gala for the group in Sacramento, California, on Saturday. He was held at San Francisco International Airport, according to CAIR.
Conservative leaders have pressured the Trump administration to exclude Hamdi entering the US. Hamdi has made appearances on British TV networks as a commentator and analyst. On Sunday, CAIR demanded his release and charged that the Trump administration had imprisoned him because he had criticized the Israeli government.
