The government of the United Kingdom has announced a partnership with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to boost efficiency in the public sector. According to the deal the company and the scientific department signed, OpenAI may be able to access government data and see its software utilized in the fields of education, defense, security, and the legal system.
AI will be fundamental in driving change” and “driving economic growth” in the UK, according to Technology Secretary Peter Kyle. Advocates for digital privacy, however, claimed that the collaboration demonstrated “this government’s credulous approach to big tech’s increasingly dodgy sales pitch.
According to the agreement, the UK and OpenAI would “develop safeguards that protect the public and uphold democratic values” and may create a “information sharing program.
Additionally, it states that they would look at investing in AI infrastructure, which often entails constructing or growing data centers, which are enormous banks of computer servers that run AI. Additionally, OpenAI plans to grow its London branch, which it claims already has over 100 employees.
The commitment outlines the objectives of a collaboration between the UK government and OpenAI and is a declaration of purpose rather than a legally enforceable agreement.
