Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signed a free trade agreement with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, resulting in a multibillion-pound export boost. Under the terms of the deal, UK automobiles and whiskey will be cheaper to export to India, while Indian textiles and jewelry will be cheaper to export to the UK.
The agreement took three years to achieve and includes a new India-UK effort to combat illicit migration. Opponents had warned that the deal would undercut British workers due to extended social security terms, but UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said this was “completely wrong” and that Indian workers on temporary secondment in the UK would receive the same deal as many other countries.
Sir Keir, speaking at the signing ceremony at the UK prime minister’s country home Chequers, described the UK-India pact as “the biggest and most economically significant” trade deal Britain has negotiated since Brexit. “This deal is now signed, sealed, and delivered,” he stated.
The UK has been negotiating a deal like this for many years, but it was this administration that made it happen, and with it, we’re sending a very strong message that Britain is open for business, which is already creating a lot of confidence.
