Tech Giant Amazon Fires Hundreds of Workers from its Cloud Computing Division

As of its most recent financial report, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been increasing and currently accounts for 14% of the company’s overall revenue. The corporation has been modifying its approach since the 2020 debut of Amazon Fresh, a physical store.

It announced on Tuesday that it would discontinue Walk Out, its self-checkout system, from every shop.

The company reported that the most recent job layoffs affected several hundred positions in sales, marketing, and worldwide services and a few hundred positions in its physical store technology team.

Although most AWS jobs are in Seattle, the company’s home city, Amazon said it will be making layoffs at its businesses worldwide.

According to the corporation, US-based workers would get transitional health insurance, assistance in seeking new employment, and salary and benefits for at least 60 days. Additionally, they will be qualified for severance money.

Excluding contractors and temporary staff, Amazon employed about 1.5 million people full-time and part-time as of the end of the previous year.

Amazon has been focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) through AWS, including investing in safety and research start-up Anthropic last month.

Technology giants, including Microsoft which has invested in ChatGPT, are competing to develop their AI capabilities.
