Ahead of a self-imposed deadline of July 4, Senate Republicans are rushing to approve a budget package that is essential to President Donald Trump’s second-term ambition. With the current version of the “Big Beautiful Bill”—all 940 pages—being released just after midnight, party officials have been bending over themselves for an initial vote on Saturday.
Rank-and-file To pay for the extension of almost $3.8 trillion (£2.8 trillion) in Trump tax incentives, Republicans have disagreed on how much to remove from social programs. Last month, the House of Representatives approved the massive tax and spending bill by a single vote.
The White House advocated for the approval of the package and approved the most recent changes in a message issued to Senate offices on Saturday. The memo allegedly stated that it “would be the ultimate betrayal” not to approve the budget.
However, John Thune, the Senate majority leader, described the intentions for a vote on Saturday as “aspirational”. Ron Johnson, a Republican senator from Wisconsin, stated on Saturday’s Fox & Friends show that he would vote “no” because he still needed time to study it.
“We just got the bill,” stated Johnson. At approximately 1:23 a.m., I received my first copy. There are still two Republican senators who are not giving up. One day after Rand Paul of Kentucky rejected the proposal, Thom Tillis of North Carolina objected on Saturday.
