The CEO of India’s biggest airline, IndiGo, has stepped down. This comes months after a crisis that caused the airline to cancel thousands of flights. The airline acknowledged that Pieter Elbers had left right away, saying he did so for “personal reasons” but did not provide further information. The move comes after a lot of attention was paid to the situation last year when new pilot roster restrictions caused a lot of cancellations that left customers stuck all over India.
IndiGo owns approximately two-thirds of India’s domestic aviation market, so problems with its operations are a big deal for the country’s rapidly rising air travel industry. The airline has about 440 planes and largely flies within the United States. It also flies to a few places in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
It has been a big part of the quick growth of India’s aviation industry, which is one of the fastest-growing air travel industries in the world. IndiGo announced in a press release on Tuesday that Rahul Bhatia, one of the company’s co-founders, will run the airline until a new CEO is chosen.
IndiGo canceled around 4,500 flights in December, which was the biggest disruption in the airline’s 20-year history. This left thousands of customers stuck at airports all throughout the country.
