After his connections to Jeffrey Epstein were revealed in the most recent documents made public by the US Department of Justice, billionaire Thomas Pritzker announced his retirement as chairman of Hyatt Hotels. In a statement released on Monday, he admitted to using “terrible judgement” in continuing to communicate with the convicted sexual offender. In the years following the financier’s 2008 plea agreement on sex crime charges, Pritzker had regular communication with Epstein, according to recently made public documents.
Following the publication of documents revealing the size of Epstein’s network of prominent elites, Pritzker is the most recent businessman to come under fire. After consulting with other board members, Pritzker, who has served as executive chairman of the multinational hotel chain since 2004, announced that he will not seek reelection. It is my duty and obligation to exercise good stewardship. Assuring a smooth transition at Hyatt is part of good stewardship, according to Pritzker, the billionaire heir to the hotel chain’s wealth.
He said: “Good stewardship also means protecting Hyatt, particularly in the context of my association with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell which I deeply regret.” In 2021, Maxwell was found guilty of enticing minors to work for Epstein. He died in 2019 while being held on sex trafficking accusations after being found guilty in 2008 of soliciting prostitution from a minor. In addition to denouncing the pair’s behaviour, Pritzker stated: “There is no excuse for failing to distance myself sooner.”
