South Asia has seen the start of the first drone conflict in history between neighbours with nuclear weapons. Islamabad quickly refuted India’s accusation that Pakistan launched waves of drones and missiles at three military locations in Indian territory and Indian-administered Kashmir on Thursday.
In the last few hours, Pakistan claimed to have shot down 25 Indian drones. Delhi said nothing in public. The tit-for-tat assaults, according to experts, signal a risky new stage in the long-running conflict as both sides trade unmanned missiles and artillery over a tense border.
The area is on the verge of escalation while Washington and other international powers call for moderation. Drones which are quiet, distant, and debatable, are starting a new phase in the India-Pakistan confrontation.
“A new drone age is dawning on the Indo-Pak war, one in which ‘invisible eyes’ and unmanned precision may decide whether to escalate or restrain. Jahara Matisek, a professor at the US Naval War College, told the BBC that the side that masters drone warfare will not only view the battlefield in South Asia’s disputed skies, but will also define it.
