The Family of Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Accuses the Hospital of Being Negligent in the Death of their Son

In relation to the death of her 21-month-old son, the family of Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a hospital of negligence. The family of renowned postcolonial feminist author Nkanu Nnamdi was “devastated” when she passed away on Wednesday in a Nigerian hospital after a brief illness.

The family now claims that the toddler’s death was caused by a long list of mistakes at Euracare Hospital in Lagos, including being deprived of oxygen and receiving excessive sedation, which resulted in a heart attack. The hospital declared that the care had been in accordance with international standards and offered its “deepest sympathies” for the child’s passing.

It further stated that Nkanu was “critically ill” when he arrived at the hospital and that an investigation into his death was still in progress. In an interview with Nigerian broadcaster Arise TV on Saturday, Adichie’s sister-in-law, Dr. Anthea Nwandu, made a number of accusations regarding the facility.

In it, she claimed that Adichie’s kid “had received too much sedation” after the medical director of Euracare informed her that he had suffered a heart attack. Additionally, Dr. Nwandu accused medical personnel of transporting the boy “not according to standard practice,” denying him oxygen, and leaving him unsupervised.
