The First Bills of Trump’s Second Term are Vetoed

A possible confrontation with US lawmakers has been set up by President Donald Trump’s first vetoes of legislation since taking office again almost a year ago. Congress passed the two laws he vetoed with support from both parties, so lawmakers may gather enough votes to overturn him in the coming year.

One of the proposals, sponsored by Representative Lauren Boebert, a well-known Republican and Trump admirer, sought to reduce the costs that municipalities in her home state of Colorado are paying for a new water pipeline.

A Florida Native American tribe that had filed a lawsuit to halt the construction of “Alligator Alcatraz” would have benefited from the other bill’s backing for a flood control project. It’s enough. Trump declared, “My Administration is dedicated to preventing American taxpayers from funding costly and unreliable policies.”

He noted that the bill would have negatively impacted the federal government’s reimbursement for constructing the pipeline, which will supply fresh water to the state’s eastern region. In response to the veto, Boebert, one of the few conservative members to defy Trump and demand the release of the Epstein papers this winter, wrote on X:
