Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has urged Elon Musk’s X to address the issue of its artificial intelligence chatbot Grok being used to make nonconsensual sexualized photographs of women and girls as soon as possible.
The BBC has observed numerous cases on X of individuals asking the bot to digitally strip people and put them in bikinis without their agreement, as well as in sexual circumstances. Kendall described the situation as “absolutely appalling, adding, “We cannot and will not allow the spread of these degrading images.”
In an announcement, X said: “We take action regarding illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, fully suspending accounts, and collaborating with local governments and law enforcement officials as needed. Anyone who uses or encourages Grok to create unlawful content will face the same sanctions as if they uploaded illicit content,” the statement stated.
On Monday, Ofcom said it had made “urgent contact” with Elon Musk’s business xAI and was looking into reports that Grok was producing “undressed images” of humans. Ofcom is entirely correct in looking into this as a matter of urgency, and it has my full support to take any enforcement action it deems appropriate,” she said.
