François Villeroy de Galhau has surprisingly said he will step down as Governor of the Bank of France early. Analysts think the date was planned to protect the future leadership of the organization. On Monday, the governor of the French central bank quit. His resignation will take effect in June 2026.
This sudden exit happens almost 18 months before his second term was supposed to end in October 2027. The move puts the job of picking his successor in the hands of Emmanuel Macron, the current President of France.
If Villeroy de Galhau had finished his entire term, the next head of the Bank of France would have been chosen by the victor of the presidential election in April 2027. Current polls show that a far-right candidate would win.
Villeroy de Galhau said in a news release, “I think I would have accomplished the core of my mission a bit more than a year before the end of my second term. The governor, who controlled the Bank of France for almost 11 years, also wrote a separate letter to employees saying, “this decision may come as a surprise.
